Hewett's family moved to Border Street in Birmingham, Alabama and he graduated from Phillips High School. He worked as an usher at the Lyric Theatre and briefly as a firefighter before he joined the U.S. Army, where he served at Fort Myer, Virginia. After an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, Thomas, as he was known in the Army, returned to Alabama and met the love of his life, Glenda Dunlap, at Hunter Street Baptist Church.
Hewett began his professional career as an electrical designer at Rust Engineering and later retired from BE&K. He served as a deacon, greeter, and Sunday School teacher at Shades Mountain Baptist Church for over 50 years. He also served at Love In Action for many years.
Hewett will be lovingly remembered for his welcoming smile, his firm handshake, and his love for his family and all people because of his faith in God.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life Glenda, his father William Bennie Mullenix, his mother Bertha Beulah Shirley Mullenix, his brother Louis Mullenix, and his sister Ruth Skinner.
Survivors include Hewett's daughters, Debbie Mullenix and Sheryl Childers; his granddaughter, Kristen Plier (Sean); and his great-grandchildren, Adeline Alise and Finn Thomas Plier.
The graveside service will be Friday, January 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 12 noon, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m., at Shades Mountain Baptist Church’s Conference Center, 2017 Columbiana Road, Vestavia Hills, Alabama 35216. Dr. Danny Wood will officiate.
