If you had asked me before now what my memory of Mrs. McKay would be at this moment, I would have assumed, obviously, that it would have something to do with teaching math - with her determination and her willingness to go beyond the curriculum with those who could and her near-infinite patience with those who needed extra help to get to a functional state.

What's coming first to mind today, though, is the day that Charlie Kenwright was shot.  I had her for first period that day, and Sue came into the room, clearly shaken.  She paused at her desk for a moment, gathering herself, then said, "OK, we're going to pray."  And she did, for 4-5 minutes, thanking God for Charlie's life, asking for comfort for his family, and praying for justice and peace for us all.  Then she told us to talk to her or to someone else if we needed help working through it, and she went into her lesson plan.  That combination of humanity and openness combined with her commitment to her mission in life is what's shining through to me today.
