Stephen William Carter, age 73, beloved husband of Sandy Morris Carter, passed away peacefully at his home in Helena, Alabama on Friday morning, March 22, 2024. Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Steve also lived in Detroit, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri before moving to the Birmingham, Alabama area in 2021.
He earned his Bachelor Degree in Political Science and Government from Michigan State University before embarking on a long career spanning over 40 years, first with Arthur Anderson LLP before spending the majority of his career in the Unemployment Insurance industry as the Director of Government Relations at Equifax Employer Services.
After his distinguished career, Steve retired this year to pursue his passion for the ministry by working on his Master of Divinity Degree. His love of music inspired him to pick up guitar lessons in his retirement, while waiting on his favorite St. Louis Cardinals to start the 2024 baseball season.
In addition to his wife Sandy, Steve is survived by his step-children, Suzannah Parker and Casey Rhymes; his beloved sister, Suzy Carter Koths (Rich); his nephew, Bo Ferman (Meagan); and his niece, Emily Al-Shaer. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Betty Ann Patrick Carter, as well as his sister, Mary Carter Suurmeyer, and brother-in-law, Richard Suurmeyer. Steve will also be missed by Baxter, Maggie, and Moose, his beloved dogs.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham, Alabama from 5-7 p.m., to include A Service of Remembrance for Steve at 6 p.m. at Ridout's Southern Heritage. The funeral home is located at 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124.
