Ronald Lee Jones, 75, died at home with his wife of 33 years, Carole, by his side. Born on June 18, 1942 to Frances (Cole) Jones and Albert Jones in BIrmingham, AL. He is preceded in death by his parents and by siblings Andrea Warren (Dan), and Raymond “Butchie” Jones.
Ron is survived by his wife and children David (Mary), Mark, and Emily (Bobby). He was the proud “Papa” to five grandchildren: Lauren and Micah Jones and Rob, Caroline, and William Morris. He also leaves behind brothers Tom Jones (Kathy) and Jimmy Jones (Connie), sister Judy Hilton (Robert) as well as several extended family members with whom he shared a special bond. To know Ron was to love him, and he was known and loved by many, many people.
A graduate of Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama and the University of Montevallo, Ron also served in the United States Navy. He taught 5th grade at Thompson Elementary School and was the Assistant Principal of Thompson High School before starting Metro Basketball Goals and later Metro Industries, in 1973.
Through his connections to Woodlawn High School, Ron was very involved with the Kenny Morgan Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit which honors the legacy of former Woodlawn High School football and baseball coach Kenny Morgan. His other favorite organization was his Thursday morning coffee club, comprised of friendships more than 50 years old during which memories, legends and the occasional tall tales were often retold.
Funeral arrangements have been set for Monday, May 7th. There will be a visitation at Southern Heritage in Pelham, Alabama from 10:00 AM - 12:00PM, followed by a brief service at noon. Interment will be at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Ron’s memory to Prince of Peace Catholic Church 4600 Preserve Parkway, Hoover, AL 35226.
