It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Robert Anthony Morgan on November 11, 2024. He was 54 years old when he went to sleep in his bed and woke up in the arms of Jesus. We are devastated by our loss, but comforted to know his long battle with diabetes and the challenges it brought him are finally over and he is safe with his Savior, living the Great Adventure in Heaven that he always dreamed and talked about on earth.
Robert was born on December 31st, 1969, and was adopted by his parents, Chuck and Alene Morgan and sister, Darby Lucas (Travers) when he was 6 months old. Four years later, his younger sister Jennifer Morgan (Gerelds) was born, completing the family of five who have loved and cared for one another with great joy in the Lord over the many years we’ve been together. Robert is survived by both of his parents, two sisters, their husbands (Mark Travers and Todd Gerelds), along with five nephews, Evan (Sarah), Graham (Hayley), Christopher (Bethany), Michael (Allison), and John Luke Travers and 5 nieces Beth Anne (Josh) Lee, Morgan (Christian) Burhus, Bailey Kay (Everett) Young, Allison (Matt) Suazo, and Maggie Leigh Gerelds along with sixteen great nephews and nieces.
Robert attended Briarwood Christian School and church, and graduated in 1988 with a string of athletic awards in Track and Field adorning the trophy case at the school. He went on to earn a Social Work degree at Troy University, where he was an active member of Campus Outreach and spent a summer in Thailand sharing the gospel with college students there. But after a year in Social Work, he realized his gifting resided in a different field of support–computers! He earned his certification from Virginia Tech and began a lifelong career of helping others fix whatever was broken or to understand how to work the new technology. His patient, gentle teaching approach and determination to stay until the problem was fixed made him everyone’s “go-to” person both at C-Spire where he worked and also the family. We are literally lost without him.
Robert also had a deep appreciation for music, instilled in him from birth but fanned into flame through Briarwood’s Youth Choir, which he participated in throughout his growing up years. The classical training Conductor James Brown taught stirred in Robert a deep love for hymns, spirituals, jazz, opera, and classical music. As if springing from within him, he learned to play the piano by ear, amazing us all. We can’t imagine his joy now, hearing the tunes of Heaven.
But it wasn’t his athleticism, his musical ability, or his tech know-how that defined him. Robert was simply the one who was always there–for each of us. Throughout the years and all of life’s events, the ups and downs, he showed up and cared, teaching us, helping us, fixing whatever we couldn’t figure out. It is a comfort to know that Jesus, the Restorer of all things, has now mended all the broken places in Robert’s life, and he is now whole with Him.
We are left with a million heart-warming memories of Robert, each of us touched by his tender heart and love for his family. When we began to get his house in order after he passed, we found the walls of his home adorned with pictures of family, his childhood teddy bear in a drawer beside his bed, and a fire safe filled with albums, pictures and cards from his parents and sisters. He was a faithful son, brother, and beloved uncle who loved each one of us so well in his quiet, unassuming way. We will miss him dearly.
Services are being held for Robert at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 16th at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in the Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, Robert’s parents have asked that memorial donations be made to either of his sisters’ ministries that he encouraged and supported throughout the years:
