Born in Breslau, Germany, in 1937, Rita was a proud German and felt the effects of WWII as a small child firsthand. She never grew tired of telling her stories from the war and the hardships she and her family endured.
As a young woman, she moved to the United States in the mid-60s to start a new life and family. She was a devoted and hard-working mother who also loved life and her numerous friends. She had a strong German network in Birmingham which was a centerpiece and source of additional pride for her. She loved gardening and tending to her roses. She also loved cooking and baking. Her exceptional cooking was always the topic of conversation, when the boys’ brought friends or girlfriends around for dinner.
Rita was a recent resident at Brookdale University in Homewood. In her short time there she managed to make many friends and establish countless endearing relationships with the other residents and staff.
Rita is survived by her two sons Garrick Stone (Jennifer) and Patrick Stone (Heidi Eikenhorst) and grandchildren Katherine Overstreet (Daniel), Christopher Stone, Sam Bozin, Alexa Stone, and Darcy Stone. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Landen Ragland and William Overstreet. Rita is predeceased by her son Geoffrey Stone and long-time friend, Jim Gisi.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Rita on Saturday, July 29th,her birthday, from 11am – 1pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL.
