Richard Alan “Ric” Shirley, age 63, of Montevallo, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2018. In addition to owning and operating Movie Madness video store in Homewood, Alabama, he was a professional songwriter and musical performer.
Ric attended Cahaba Heights Elementary School and Gresham Junior High before graduating from Briarwood Christian School. He attended college in El Cajon, California and later traveled throughout Great Britain and parts of Europe. His international excursions helped in the development of his worldview, creativity, and unique musical style.
A charter member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama, Ric went on to write and record music, performing on his guitar at many local music events. Some of his songs were recorded by other artists.
Ric was predeceased by his wife, Stephanie Shirley; his parents, Don W. Shirley and Helen E. Reid Shirley, formerly of Carrollton, Georgia; one brother, Kim Shirley; maternal grandparents, Reuben B. and Jennie S. Reid, formerly of Carrollton; maternal great-grandparents, William Joseph and Lula Jane Keton Sheffield, and Robert Clifton and Edie B. Rigsby Reid, all of Carrollton; and an uncle, Alfred R. Reid.
Survivors include Ric’s two brothers, Don Shirley of Montevallo and Rod Shirley of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; girlfriend, Tammy Taylor; and other relatives, many who live in Carrollton.
The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. EST on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Carrollton.
Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama is directing.
