Ozen Batum, age 73, of Pelham, Alabama, passed away at Brookwood Medical Center in Homewood, Alabama, on Sunday, July 10, 2011. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family: his wife Ann, his daughters Julia and Melissa Batum, his nephew James Bradley, and nieces Deniz Ciger and Derya Mueller. Ozen was born in Bozuyuk, Turkey on November 11, 1937 and became a naturalized citizen to honor this country in 1976. He graduated from Georgia Technical Institute with advanced degrees in chemical and nuclear engineering. Ozen worked for Southern Company Service, Nuclear Division, for 27 years and continued to work at other engineering positions until his retirement in 2004. Graveside services will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Road (Hwy 119) in Pelham on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Southern Environmental Law Center in Birmingham, Alabama, The Nature Conservancy of Alabama, or Oak Mountain State Park Playground Fund.
