The Ramsay High School graduate was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and laughter. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her gift for serving others included writing notes of encouragement and visiting the needy.
Mary Jane truly loved children. She treated each child as a uniquely treasured individual, whether they were one of her own grandchildren or great-grandchildren, they were in her care at the church nursery, or they were a child of a stranger.
A long-time member of North Shelby Baptist Church, Mary Jane was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and she lived her faith. She had a quick wit, loved life, and was one of a kind. She will be greatly missed.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Carter; her parents, Arthur Hicks and Lucille Capps Hicks; and one sister, Willie Jim Spann. She is survived by her two daughters, Kathy Carter Wilkey (Gene) and Pam Carter (Margaret Ann Mayfield); one son, Dan Carter (Marian); grandchildren, Lauren Wilkey Morse (Brian), Katie Wilkey Bailey (Tommy), Jeremy Carter (Meredith), and Ryan Carter; great-grandchildren, Carter Morse, Katelyn Morse, Lucy Bailey, Gunner Bailey, and Silas Carter; siblings, Joe Hicks and Sara McCrary; and nieces and nephews.
The family expresses special thanks to Mary Jane's caregiver, Toni Duke, and her nurse from Affinity Hospice, Malissa Anderson, RN, for the many ways they showed compassion and care.
Family and friends will gather at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Monday, March 3, 2025 for visitation from 2-3 p.m., followed by A Service of Remembrance for Mary Jane at 3 p.m. at the funeral home's chapel. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
