Marlin received his formal education at Talladega High School and attended Bob Jones University.
He was married to Linda Gaile Alldredge on June 21, 1963. Their union was blessed with one child.
From a very young age, Marlin took lessons to master the piano and at 14 years gave his life to Jesus Christ. With a call on his life to minister, the entirety of his life was committed to studying the Word, which he combined with the gift of playing piano, traveling for a period as pianist with gospel quartets. The Word, the ministry, and practice of that piano consumed his life and in later years enjoyed his family gospel singing group and the visiting entailed with that.
Marlin worked as Scale Master for Dravo Lime Company. In his last working years, he worked a security guard for Securitas.
Marlin was survived by his wife, Linda Hodgens; daughter, Marisa Hodgens; grandchildren, Arista Carlee and Tristan Carlee; sisters-in-law, Laura Edward and Nancy Alldredge; brother-in-law, Chester Edwards; nephews, Hoyt, David and Terry Hodgens; nieces, Karen Pickett, Lisa Horten, Lauren; cousins, great nephews, and great nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert June Hodgens, and sister, Ava Louise Hodgens Tumlin.
