Betty, 69 of Birmingham, AL passed away in the early morning of Monday, January 16, 2017. Betty was born in Nashville, TN on June 25, 1947. She grew up in Mt. Pleasant, TN, but moved to Fredericksburg, VA in 1961. She graduated from James Monroe High School there, and Radford College. Betty worked in Washington, D.C. for the US Army as a civilian employee for a number of years. She retired from government service in order to confront and address bipolar disorder and live with the disease rather than allow the disease to conquer her life. She moved to Birmingham, AL near her brother and twin sister in 2008. She strongly supported her family’s efforts in support of NAMI and participated in several NAMI events to support fundraising for NAMI efforts. She enjoyed activities with her twin sister, Dougie and her husband, and her brother and his children and grandchildren.
Betty was predeceased in death by her mother, Elizabeth M. Walsh and her sister, Douglass “Dougie” Ann Hovey. She is survived by her brother, James F. Walsh (Peggy) and her brother-in-law, Robert Hovey, along with cousins, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Cemetery on Friday, January 20th at 3:30pm. The family requests donations to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.namialabama.org) in lieu of flowers.
