Joseph Earl Nelson, age 82, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on December 5, 1937, in Jefferson Township, Houston County, Minnesota, and grew up in New Albin, Iowa. He attended New Albin High School where he lettered in Baseball and Basketball. After graduating high school in 1955, Joe served 4 years in the Navy before starting a job at Harbert International Construction Company in Birmingham, AL. After 34 years of employment, Joe Nelson retired as Vice President of Harbert.
Shortly after retiring from Harbert, Joe helped his sons Bill & Joe start The Nelson Team, a family owned and operated business that has been serving the Birmingham area for the past 30 years. The Nelson Team provides professional design and installation of all components of Landscaping, Hardscape, Irrigation, and Outdoor Lighting to create a complete Outdoor Living Space.
Over the years Joe has served as an Elder at his church (Shades Mountian Bible Church), the Director of Precept Ministries (Birmingham, AL division), a Bible teacher, a Board Member at Briarwood Christian School (Birmingham, AL), and a Board Member at Ponderosa Bible Camp (Mentone, AL).
Joe was preceded in death by his parents: Albert Oke Nelson and Leona Mettille Nelson; his first wife and mother of his children: Ramona Colvin Nelson; and his second wife: Brenda Branch Nelson.
He is survived by his 4 sons: Bill (Donna), Joe (Angela), Jim (Tam), & Jeff (Ann), 28 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren, and his 2 brothers: Harold Nelson and Ralph Nelson.
His funeral will be Monday, but sadly, due to COVID19 restrictions, it will be immediate family only and graveside only.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Ponderosa Bible Camp, 1018 County Road 734, Mentone, AL 35984.
