Joseph Clay Lewellyn of Birmingham, Alabama died October 20, 2023. He was born October 7, 1933 in Harrisville, West Virginia. A son of the late Asa C. Lewellyn, Sr. and Laura Maude Kimble, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving 4 years during the Korean Conflict as a jet aircraft electrician.
He was employed by the Louisville Nashville railroad as a Signalman for eight years. He retired from the City of Birmingham as Chief of Traffic Operations after 31 years of service.
He was a graduate of Mid-South Technical Institute. He also attended Bessemer Technical College.
He was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a Mason, and a Shriner, and was active as a square and round dancer. He and his wife were members of Shelby Shufflers' Square Dance Club and J&R Round Dance Club members.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were his first wife, Marilyn Easterling Lewellyn, and his second wife, Edna Cannon Lewellyn; four brothers and four sisters: Hazel Gertrude King McGee, Laura Belle Monroe, Edith Cora Collins, Asa C. Lewellyn, Jr., Mary Nicholson, Charles Wesley Lewellyn, William Todd Lewellyn, and Earl James Lewellyn.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Lewellyn Vaughan (Charles); two grandsons, Johnathan E. Vaughan, and Brandon E. Vaughan, all of Birmingham, and several nieces and nephews.
He was a loving, devoted, husband, father, and grandfather. The family will receive friends at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
