He is preceded in death by his parents, John Daniel Harmon and Brodys Meetze Harmon and his sister, Helen Harmon Allen. He is the father of Karen Harmon Edge, Deborah Harmon Harlan (Jay), and Jennifer Harmon Taylor (Russell), and has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carol Setser Harmon and is the stepfather of Lisa Ledbetter (Todd), and Laura Nabors (Les), and has five step-grandchildren.
Born in Columbia, SC on May 14, 1938, John grew up in Charleston, SC, where he was a member of Advent Lutheran Church. He graduated from Chicora High School and studied engineering at the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He served in the US Army and Reserves and was also a Mason.
John began his career as a general contractor in Charleston with R. Harry Morse and later established Harmon and Associates, where he built commercial and residential properties in the Charleston area. In 1970, he relocated to Birmingham where he began a 35 year federal career with housing and urban development. He continued to do remodeling and construction until his retirement.
An outgoing and friendly man, John never met a stranger, was always willing to lend a helping hand, and will forever be remembered for his warm smile and firm handshake. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 19, 2017 from 11:00 till noon at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham. A service will follow in the chapel at noon with Pastor Michael Miller officiation. Mr. Harmon will be laid to rest at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
