HARKINS, JOHN W., JR., of Birmingham, Alabama, and formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away October 18, 2011. He was born in Flovilla, Georgia, on March 30, 1929, the son of John Harkins, Sr. and Frances Allen Harkins. John graduated from Emory at Oxford Academy and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1952. His lively sense of humor, passion for his beloved UGA Bulldogs, and love of life will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. John was preceded in death by his wife, Mimi Styles Harkins. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Hill of Birmingham; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Vicky Harkins of Atlanta; and three grandsons, Tyler Ewing, Justin Harkins, and Andrew Harkins. Visitation: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Memorial Service: 1 p.m. the same day in Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham. The family wishes to express deep thanks to the doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and caregivers at Greenbrier at The Altamont and New Beacon Hospice.
