Dr. John O. Burgess, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the dental community, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 after a six-month battle with cancer. Dr. Burgess was a distinguished researcher, professor, and clinical dentist whose contributions to dental science have left a lasting impact on the field.
Dr. Burgess proudly served as Colonel in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years. He graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry. He received his Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center before he completed one-year General Practice Residency and a two-year General Dentistry Residency.
Born with a passion for knowledge and discovery, Dr. Burgess dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence in dentistry. His groundbreaking research and commitment to education have influenced countless students and professionals, making him a revered figure in both academic and clinical settings. Dr. Burgess presented more than 1000 Continuing Education programs nationally and internationally and was an active investigator in clinical trials. He authored more than 500 articles, abstracts and textbook chapters.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Burgess was a man of many interests. He had a deep love for sports, often spending his weekends cheering for his favorite teams and discussing the teams’ wins/blunders with his sons. He loved music and was an avid reader, Dr. Burgess always had a thirst for God’s Word and loved sharing his love for Christ with others.
His talent for baking brought warmth and sweetness to family gatherings, where he delighted loved ones, especially his favorite people . . . his grandchildren and his dog, Moose. Throughout his life he devoted his time into coaching for his children’s athletic teams, he was very involved in ministry work at his church, taught Sunday School lessons and opened his home to those needing encouragement.
Dr. Burgess was predeceased by his daughter, Tricia, and son, Jason (Jennifer). Survivors include Dr. Burgess's devoted wife, Patricia, whose support throughout 44 years of marriage was his treasure; one daughter, Robin (Andy); sons, Francis (Jenise) and Benjamin (Cally); and his nine cherished grandchildren, Collyn, Addyson, Kayla, Ryland, Shay, Adley, Anna Grace, Hope, and Molly.
Dr. Burgess's integrity, humility, grace, faith and determination are some of the characteristics that best describe him. His generosity knew no bounds. His love for his family was unwavering. His legacy of love, learning, and laughter will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be sorely missed.
