“Jep” went to college at the University of Alabama and then joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a Military Police Officer in Europe during the Korean War. During this time, he met Elisabeth Seidler in Berlin, Germany, and they were married. They continued living in Europe and Africa after Jep’s service, and he sold insurance from Libya, Ethiopia and Germany.
In 1972 they adopted a son, Eugene, and then in 1974, adopted a second son, Glen. The family moved to Jep’s home state of Alabama, settling in Birmingham, where they lived for many years at a home on Shades Crest Road. Jep became a successful insurance executive and Liz was a homemaker. He enjoyed tending to his property, and University of Alabama football. He obtained a pilot’s license and flew his own single-engine plane for business and leisure. The Mason family joined Shades Mountain Baptist Church, where they became involved and flourished personally and spiritually for more than a decade under the leadership of their beloved pastor, Dr. Charles Carter. Mr. Mason was a devoted Christian, and taught Sunday School, was an usher, and a deacon.
Elisabeth developed frontotemporal dementia, and Jep cared for her at bedside until her death on March 10, 2021. Jep then moved to be with friends in Huntsville, Alabama, and died April 8, 2025, from breathing complications.
Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his wife, Elisabeth, and his brother, Euel E. “Spence” Mason. He is survived by his son, Eugene; Eugene’s wife, Keri; and grandchildren, Eden, Zoey and Levi; and son, Glen.
Jep will be buried next to his beloved wife, Elisabeth, at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama. A time of remembrance will be planned for family and friends for the summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
