Just before sunset Monday afternoon, September 5, 2022, James Michael "Mike" Sutley passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior and reunited with loved ones who preceded him. These include his parents, James Albert Sutley and Thelma Louise Nix Sutley; nephew, Benjamin Martin Sutley; and other much-loved family members and friends.
Mike was born February 10, 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama, and is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Kaye Walker Sutley; sister, Judy Elaine Sutley Shadrick (Jerry); brother, Martin David Sutley (Shelia Bowen Sutley); as well as a number of nieces, nephews and other extended family who will cherish memories of him.
Mike loved his family and friends dearly and shared a close bond with his parents, brother, and sister. He was a loving, dedicated husband. He was not one for parties, but loved the family’s many gatherings, particularly summer weekends at Lake Martin.
He was also an avid motorcycle rider and especially loved his Harley Davidsons over the years. Motorcycles were a family sport for the Sutley clan when Mike was younger and included many weekend trips and longer rides with his father, brother, sister, uncles, and cousins. Later in his life, he was happy to find even more riders that shared not only his love of motorcycles, but also his Christian values.
Mike was a kind and generous man, always quick to offer a helping hand to anyone in need and go the extra mile to help a friend. He was a quiet man in most circumstances, but always strong in spirit, his faith, and protection of those he loved.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Grandview Medical Center, Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, and New Beacon Hospice for their compassion and loving care.
Visitation will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on Thursday, September 8, 2022 from 1-2 p.m., followed by a Service of Remembrance for Mike at 2 p.m. at the funeral home's chapel. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. The Reverend Skip Parvin will officiate. Pallbearers will be Brady Sutley, Jeff Shadrick, Jimmy Beard, Larry Nix, Ricky Nix, and John Fondie Scholl. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Thrailkill, John Williams, and Mike Maddox.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Samaritan’s Purse.
