Jim graduated from Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Alabama. He was married to Martha Anne Spear on December 22, 1979. They met while attending Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham.
Jim worked in telecommunications for South Central Bell, Bell South, BE&K, and AT&T. He was involved for many years with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Boy Scouts of America, Trail Life USA, and the Joyful Jammers, and he passionately served the families and staff of the Big Oak Ranch, as well as local and foreign missions. He served as an ordained deacon and elder at Altadena Valley Presbyterian Church (AVPC). He was a man of many hobbies, including collecting American Indian artifacts, woodworking, scuba diving, fossils, travelling, and spending quality time with beloved family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Howard Darden, and his mother, Annie Dean Darden. He is survived by son James D. Darden (Candice), son David M. Darden (Amber), grandson Weston M. Darden, sister Kathy D. Luttrell (Terry), brother John M. Darden (Becky), and several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at Altadena Valley Presbyterian Church (AVPC) in Birmingham at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2023. A visitation and reception will also be on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the church from at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Big Oak Ranch, AVPC Missions ministry, Trail Life USA, Compassion International, or Gideons International.
