A Minor High School graduate, James attended Auburn University and launched his career in radio communications, serving as president of the Tennessee Radio Network in Nashville from 1979 to 1986. Later, he co-owned and operated Chafin Insurance Agency in the Birmingham area until 2017. In his leisure, he enjoyed playing golf and watching Auburn Tigers football and basketball games.
James is survived by his loving wife, Linda C. Chafin, to whom he was wed on September 9, 1967; one daughter, Mikal Chafin; one son, Brian Chafin (Cindy); three grandchildren, Jessica Adwell (Chris), Mackenzie Greene (Colton), and Brody Chafin; great-grandchildren, Levi Adwell and Emersyn Adwell; and two brothers, Michael Chafin (Brenda) and Larry Chafin (Linda).
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, featuring A Service of Remembrance at 6 p.m.
