Irvin Wendell Watkins Jr. was born on July 8, 1931, in Starkville, Mississippi, to Irvin Wendell Watkins and Nora Livingston. He received his early education at Starkville High School and went on to take courses at Mississippi State University.
A man of faith, Irvin was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. On March 5, 1998, he was united in holy matrimony with Ann Wallace in Birmingham, Alabama. Together, the couple shared a beautiful life and a family of three children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Irvin proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He dedicated nearly 60 years of his professional life to Vulcan Asphalt, where he worked as a sales manager. He took great pride in his career and built lasting relationships with colleagues and customers alike.
In his leisure time, Irvin enjoyed flying airplanes, playing golf, dining out, relaxing at the beach, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. He deeply loved his work, his customers, and the fellowship he found in the AA community. At the time of his passing, Irvin celebrated 44 years of sobriety—a milestone that reflected his strength, humility, and commitment to personal growth.
Irvin was also a proud member of the Shriners and the Masonic Lodge, living a life of service, community, and brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and his beloved son, Tony Watkins.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Ann Watkins; children, Collin Smith, Jaison Smith (Whitney), Stephanie Lewis, and Eric Hull; grandchildren, Caroline McCreless (John), Sam Watkins (Lauren), Taylor Smith, and Owen Smith; great-grandson, Jace Irvin Watkins; sister, Irene Greene; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.
Irvin’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion—to his family, his work, his faith, and his recovery. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
