Hugh Butler Mitchell Jr. was born on October 21, 1934 and passed from this earthly life into life everlasting with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 23, 2020. Hugh was born to Alice Ruth Huff and Hugh Butler Mitchell in Mobile, AL. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1952. He attended Auburn University. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Brown, and they had four children. Hugh became a union plumber in Mobile in his early twenties. In 1962, Hugh and his uncle, Bill Huff, founded H&M Plumbing Company, moving the families to Huntsville, AL. In 1968, the company relocated to Birmingham, where it came to be known as H&M Mechanical Contractors, which later merged with Comfort Systems USA in 1998. In 2004, Hugh joined his son Mitch in a new venture, Mitchell Mechanical. Hugh loved his work and was very active as an executive of Mitchell Mechanical until he was eighty. He was blessed with a winsome personality, who was a mentor and a great friend to his employees, his suppliers, and his clients. A devout Christian, he was known as a kind and generous man to all who were fortunate enough to work with him during the over 60 years he practiced his trade. He was a long time member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church for over 45 years where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Bernard Owen Farnell. He is survived by his wife Betty Brown Mitchell; his sister Sylvia Farnell Taconi of Windermere, FL; his son Mitch Mitchell (Vanessa) of Birmingham, AL, his daughter Anne Mitchell Johnson (Jay) of Alexander City, AL, his daughter Alice Mitchell Cowart of Alpharetta, GA, his daughter Amy Mitchell Lepkowski (David) of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren Hugh Mitchell of Nashville, TN, Alex Mitchell (Eleojo) of Atlanta, GA, Brown Johnson (Katherine) of Augusta, GA, Graham Johnson of Huntsville, AL, Laurie Anne Johnson Gonzalez (Taylor) of Phoenix, AZ, Elizabeth Maddox Morgan (Andrew) and Ross Lepkowski of Birmingham, AL, Matthew Cowart, Emily Cowart and Will Cowart of Alpharetta, GA; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A family graveside service will be held March 24, 2020 at Southern Heritage. In lieu of flowers, it is the family’s desire for a donation to be made to The Wales Goebel Ministry or Sav-a-Life both located at 1484 McGuire Road, Birmingham, AL 35216. The family would like to thank all the special caregivers that attended to him in this last year, especially Rose Swann, Pam Fields, and Sindy Moss.
