Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. A Celebration of Harry Yager’s Life and Legacy will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham, and burial will follow at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. Pallbearers will be Eagle Scouts of Boy Scouts Troop 90 and a special friend.
Harry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Wilkins Yager; daughters, Tracie Y. Walker (Roland) of Maryville, Tennessee and Trudy Y. Dennis (Kenneth) of Mount Olive, Alabama; grandson, Cade Walker of Maryville; granddaughter, Kendyl Dennis of Mount Olive; brother, Riley Yager; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Harry was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Riley Yager and Annie Hartgraves Yager of Pratt City and Forestdale, Alabama; brothers, William Yager of Homewood, Alabama and Arthur Yager of Adamsville, Alabama; and sisters, Dorothy Hill, Nina Strength, and Nolie Yager of Pratt City and Forestdale.
Harry served in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard Reserves. He worked with the Boy Scouts of America for over 60 years serving as Scout Master, Assistant Scout Master, Eagle Scout Board of Review, District Commissioner, and Order of the Arrow Chapter Advisor. He was recognized for his years of service and was presented with several awards, including the Vulcan Award and the highest civilian award given by the Boy Scouts of America, The Silver Beaver.
Harry was a member of First Baptist Church of Helena, where he served as a Deacon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
