It is with great sadness that we announce that Edwin Raymond Holcombe, of Birmingham, passed away on Tuesday January 21, 2014 after a valiant battle with Crohn’s disease and, more recently, cancer. Edwin is the founder of HGH Hardware Supply, Inc. which recently celebrated its 50th year in business. He adored his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, RV-ing with his friends, and he was a hovercraft enthusiast. Ed was a skilled carpenter/cabinetmaker and also a pilot.
Edwin will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Vaughn Holcombe; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Tena Holcombe; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Kevin Ashbaugh; brother Ronald Eugene Holcombe and wife Eleanor of Queensland, Australia; sister Sarah Holcombe Hardy; grandchildren Chad Ashbaugh, Brent Ashbaugh and wife Brooke, Christena Holcombe, Emily Holcombe and Reece Holcombe; and great granddaughter Ellie Kate Ashbaugh. Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, Ira Morgan and Carrie Thompson Holcombe, and brother Thomas Joseph Holcombe.
A graveside service to celebrate Edwin’s life will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, January 25th at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Cullman County (880 Co. Road 1714, Holly Pond, AL 35083). The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 5pm-7pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. Floral tributes are appreciated but memorials honoring Mr. Holcombe, to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA.org), are also welcome.
