Edward Gullatt Lother, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on April 19 surrounded by loving family. Mr. Lother was a longtime resident of Birmingham, Alabama; former resident of Mandeville, Louisiana; and a current resident of Panama City Beach, Florida. He is survived by his wife Patt; his children: son Edward III, son Barry and daughter-in-law Sonja, son Bill and daughter-in-law Rhonda, and daughter Melissa and son-in-law Kevin; grandsons Drew, Trey, Zac, Chace, and Brody; granddaughters Pippa and Leigh; sister Kathryn and brother-in-law Bob; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as his beloved dogs and grand-dogs. Mr. Lother is preceded in death by his mother Jewell (Simpson) and father Ed.
Mr. Lother was born on January 27, 1937, at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, Alabama. He grew up in Norwood and graduated from Phillips High School in Birmingham. Mr. Lother is a graduate of the University of Alabama and served on the Board of Visitors for the College of Continuing Studies for 14 years.
His career with BellSouth (AT&T) spanned 40 years—beginning as a lineman in Birmingham and retiring as a Sales Vice President in Louisiana.
Mr. Lother was born into the technical aspects of stage and show business, working to coordinate light and sound for various concert, symphony, and theater productions. He was a member of IATSE Local 78, Birmingham, Alabama.
He proudly served in the Alabama National Guard as part of the 117th Technical Recon Squadron, during which time he was stationed in France for the Berlin Crisis.
Mr. Lother was a lifelong Alabama fan, an avid golfer, and a loving and generous friend to many.
Due to current social distancing, a private family service will be held with a memorial service to follow at a later date. Pallbearers are Syl Neel, Joshua Simmons, Joseph Williams, Joshua Williams, Leon Williams, and Brett Womack.
