Funeral services will be held at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, AL on Saturday, July 27 with visitation at the church beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Bill Johnston will officiate. A graveside service will follow for friends and family at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, AL.
Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Hinton Bishop, to whom he was married for 52 years. He was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Paul Bishop, Sr. on September 26, 1940 in Columbia, SC. He had two siblings, John Paul, Jr. and the late Jeannine Bishop Patterson.
Glenn grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Ramsay High School in 1958. He was quarterback of the football team and a record setting hurdler. He received a BS in Civil Engineering in 1964 and a Masters in Civil Engineering in 1966 from The University of Alabama, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Glenn met his wife, Judy, at Alabama and they were married in 1962. Upon graduation Glenn worked for Hudson and Associates, structural engineers for 7 years. In 1973 he started his own structural engineering firm, E. Glenn Bishop and Associates, which through the years became LBYD. Today the firm provides structural and civil engineering in 5 offices with more than 100 employees.
Glenn was selected as a Fellow by the Civil Engineering Department, a Distinguished Engineering Fellow by the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama, American Council of Engineering Companies Fellow, Alabama Construction Hall of Fame, and the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. He was a past Chairman of The University of Alabama College of Engineers Leadership Board. He was a past president of the American Consulting Engineers Council of Alabama for 2 terms and past chairman of the Council of American Structural Engineers National Guidelines Committee.
Glenn has served on the Board of Advisors of the School of Civil Engineering for The University of Alabama, the Board of Advisors for the Civil Engineering School of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Engineering Advisor for the State of Alabama’s Board of Registration, Board of Directors for the Alabama Concrete Industries Association, Board of Directors for The Construction Education Foundation of Alabama and Trustee for the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. One of his major professional accomplishments is the expansion of The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Glenn was a long term member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for years. He was a member of Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, American Institute Of Steel Construction, Life Member of American Society of Civil Engineers, International Code Council, and Newcomen Society of the US.
Glenn loved to dance, so much so that his college nickname was BeBop. He also loved spending time at his cottage in Seagrove Beach with all of his family and friends.
Glenn had a very generous heart, he gave to multiple charities on a regular basis. One of Glenn’s favorite past times was playing golf at the Country Club of Birmingham where he was a member. He was a huge Alabama football fan, and he loved going to the games. He felt that everyone he met was important and showed his love openly. He loved to laugh and make others happy. His joy was contagious. He led by example. He influenced many people by being a remarkable engineer, mentor, teacher, volunteer, donor, friend, neighbor, brother, husband, grandfather, and father.
Glenn is survived by three children, Win Bishop (Tracy) and Cindy Doody (John) of Birmingham, and Elizabeth Bennett (Matt) of Nashville, and his brother John Bishop of Atlanta. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Courtney and Hinton Bishop, Margaret and Laura Doody, and Olivia and Matthew Bennett.
The family suggests that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
