Dr. Andrew Carter went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2011. He was born in Washington D.C. on June 4, 1940 to Daniel Carter and Edna D. Carter. After completing high school in Washington D.C., Dr. Carter attended college at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He then attended and graduated from The University of Tennessee Dental School. From dental school, he joined the army and was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama for two years in the Dental Corps. Dr. Carter practiced Dentistry in Sardis, Mississippi before returning to graduate school to complete a residency in Orthodontics from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Dr. Carter practiced orthodontics for 33 years in Dothan before retiring in 2007. His love for helping people was reflected in his passion to continue practicing orthodontics even after his retirement from his Dothan practice. A very active member of his community, Dr. Carter was involved in several organizations: Boy Scout Leader, PTA President, President Boys' Club of Dothan, Vice President Wiregrass Art League, President Kiwanis Club, and Vice President of Southeast Alabama Community Theatre and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. A devoted and loving husband and father is survived by: a wife of 48 years, Mary Nell, sons, Andrew Jay (Luanne), Daniel Riley (Amanda), James Justin (Emma) and Paul Quentin (Jennifer), six grandchildren: Cameron, Drew, Mary Quinn, Michael, Mac and Nate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church of Birmingham, AL. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 12:00pm until 1:00pm with the Funeral Service starting at 1pm. Burial in Southern Heritage Cemetery.
