Aunt Dollie was born on Christmas Day, 1927, to John and Lena Disheroon at her grandmother, Delphin Bontinck’s house in Ensley, Alabama. She attended Baker, Bush, and Ensley High School—class of 1945. A true Yellow Jacket, she was very involved as an acrobat, school newspaper editor and many other groups. She was very well liked with lots of friends and fond memories.
Following in her sister, Dorothy’s footsteps, she took typing and shorthand in high school, and went to work at Barrett Allied Chemical immediately after. A career secretary, she later worked for War Assets Administration, Bogg’s Brokerage Company, and in 1960, she began at Alabama Power Company where she met her husband and worked until retirement in 1985.
She married fellow Alabama Power employee, John David Jones on June 1, 1971, and supported him in his dual careers at Alabama Power and as Major General of the 87th MAC of the Army Reserve. She took very good care of her husband when he became ill, along with her parents at the same time. Widowed in 1999, she was more like a mom and grandmother than an aunt, to her niece, Christal Brannon (John) of Riverside, Alabama; great niece, Christan Brannon (Andreas Nordheider) of Dusseldorf, Germany; and great nephew, John Michael Brannon, of Birmingham, Alabama.
A lifelong Methodist, she was a member of St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Vestavia. She enjoyed outings with her friends, Stein Mart’s clearance racks, a good dollar store, and trying out any new restaurant in Birmingham that served lunch!
Aunt Dollie was blessed naturally with a servant’s heart. This gift from God grants you guaranteed success. She did her best to help anyone she knew without expecting anything in return. Combine that with a true love of God, wisdom, beauty, compassion, sincerity, drive, thoughtfulness, thrift, and initiative—then you have Aunt Dollie. She was more beautiful on the inside than outside.
Visitation will be Friday, June 9, 2023, at 1:00 pm, with a funeral at 2:00 pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers: Chandra, Lanette, India, Latrice, and Argentina—the dream team—for their kindness and compassion. These women are angels on earth.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 1-800-227-2345 or American Cancer Society P.O. Box 6704 Hagerstown, MD 21741 in honor of her sister, Dorothy Disheroon Waldrop, who died too soon of cancer in 1974.
