Denis Devane passed away on April 14, 2024. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Denis was devoted to his family and those who knew him admired him for his wisdom, strength and tenacity.
Denis was an avid outdoorsman and adventure enthusiast. He loved to be outdoors, whether that was fly fishing, downhill skiing, mountain climbing, shooting, or bicycling. Denis took his physical fitness seriously and always insisted on being on the leaderboard at the Greystone YMCA where he served on the board of directors.
He was born on February 11, 1938 in the Bronx, New York. Denis was the son of Irish immigrants and proud of his Gaelic heritage. His father was a New York City trolley car / bus driver. From his humble beginnings, he rose to become a well-respected healthcare executive. He often credited his success to his wife Peggy and his Jesuit education at All Hallows High School and Fordham University.
Denis’ first job out of college was as an encyclopedia salesman. Ambition, intelligence and skill helped him to climb the ladder to success. After an illustrious career at CIT Group including roles as VP and president of CIT Building Corporation in the corporate office in New York, Denis’ career path took him to hospital administration in Houston. In 1975, Denis was senior vice president of Lifemark Corporation. Denis went on to hold executive positions for Healthdyne Inc, Rebound Inc, and Healthsouth Corporation. He recently served on the Institutional Research Board for the University of Alabama Medical School.
Later in life, Denis discovered his faith and poured that faith into the lives of prisoners serving time in the Alabama prison system. He mentored and supported many prisoners as they transitioned back into daily life. Denis was also a devoted member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the Homestead Sunday School class. He served at Briarwood as an elder and volunteered in a variety of capacities. In addition, he served on the board of directors for Shepherds Fold, Children’s Village and Potter’s Hand. In retirement, Denis also became a watch and clock enthusiast and collector.
Denis will be missed by his four children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild, all of whom are grateful for his sound wisdom throughout their lives.
He is survived by his children: Denise Freeman (Steve), Daniel Devane (Grace), Deborah Casson (David) and Tara Devane-Jones (Richard); His grandchildren: Margaret Carrol (Kevin), Jenn Dunahoo (Harrison), Stephanie Freeman, Sarah Casson, Andrew Casson, and Liza Devane
His great granddaughter, Leighton Dunahoo.
A memorial service for Denis will be Friday, May 24, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 2200 Briarwood Way, Birmingham, AL 35243.
