Barry was born on March 8th, 1939, in Brownsville, TX, to Calvin and Elizabeth Robison. The family later moved to Los Altos, CA, where he grew up. Barry received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from Stanford University in 1962 and his Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1970. For over 30 years, Barry worked as a professional engineer in Birmingham, Alabama. He started his career in the public health service at the Jefferson County Health Department, establishing and enforcing air quality standards. He later co-founded the engineering consulting firm of Robison and Layton and then served as VP of Environmental Health and Safety at McWane Cast Iron Pipe Co.
On November 23, 1963, Barry married Susan Ann Manuel of Birmingham, AL. They raised two daughters, Amy and Barri Lynn, as well as numerous dogs, cats, birds, and hamsters. Barry was known for his great sense of humor and his love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. His grandchildren quickly coined the nickname “GrandBarry” for him, which he held dearly. Whenever they visited, Barry would spend time with them in his workshop, backyard, or the creek behind his house. He was also an avid bird watcher and reader, often spending his free time on his porch or living room observing native and migratory birds while reading. Barry was an Eagle Scout and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, both of which traditions were carried on by his grandson Sam.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, Calvin, and his mother, Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his two children, Amy and Barri Lynn; his four grandchildren, Cara, Barrett, Knox, and Sam; and his brothers, Peter and Bill.
A visitation and service will be held on Sunday at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home on 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL, 35124. Visitation will start at 1 pm with a service following at 2pm. Flowers or gifts may be sent to the funeral home address.
