parents, Charles Oakley Powell and Frances Pearl (Potts) Powell, and his sister, Mary Frances Haynes.
Charles was a graduate of Southside High School in Memphis and was active on the track team and
participated in Boy Scouts of America, earning the Star rank. Following graduation, he volunteered for the draft and served in the United States Army from October 1954 to October 1956, spending his time stationed in Germany after completing basic training.
After his military service, Charles returned to Memphis and attended Memphis State College (now
University of Memphis) and began his career with Buick Motor Division of General Motors. He joined a young professionals group at Longview Heights Baptist Church, where he met his wife, Lagena R. (Bridges) Powell. They married on November 26, 1961, and have enjoyed 62 happy years together. Charles had an accomplished career with Buick which spanned 35 years. He began in 1956 at the Parts Distribution Center in Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked until 1961 before being promoted to Assistant Car Distributor for the Memphis Zone. In 1965, he relocated to Jackson, Mississippi, to serve as District Parts and Service Manager, a role he held until 1971. He then returned to Memphis as Service Development Manager. In 1972, Charles was promoted to District Sales Manager in the Atlanta Zone and transferred to Birmingham, Alabama, where he worked until retiring in 1991.
Charles was an ordained deacon and active member of Green Valley Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as an usher and volunteered in the food bank. He also served in the community by delivering meals for Meals on Wheels.
He was a sports enthusiast, with a particular passion for the Tennessee Volunteers teams, but in recent years, he became a devoted Auburn Tigers fan. He was an avid reader, having read through the Bible numerous times.
Charles was known for his kind and gentle spirit, and his deep faith was reflected in the way he
lived. His love and devotion to both his Lord and his family, especially his grandchildren, were at the
heart of his life. He was a man of wisdom and reflection, living his life with integrity and a clear sense of purpose. He believed that “attitude is life” and his positive outlook was an encouragement
to others. One of his favorite quotes, from Dr. Charles Stanley, was: "Obey God and leave the
consequences to Him. No matter what He tells you to do, do it and trust Him for the outcome."
Charles is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lagena; one daughter, Gena Sullivan (Mark); two
grandchildren: Hannah Pope (Adam) and Joel Sullivan (Becca); two great grandchildren: Annie Pope
and Bailey Sullivan.
