Charles Wesley Point, Jr., 81, of Chelsea, Alabama passed away April 11, 2024. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 16, 1942 and is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley Point, Sr. and Frances Brough Point, and his daughter, Nanette Point Justice.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Heather Point Shaw (Jim); his forever fiancé, Bertha Knight; his grandchildren, Wesley Stephen Joiner, Jr., Gage Sorrell Justice, and Natalee Jade Justice; sister, Patricia Point Tschudin (John R., Sr.); nephew, John Tschudin, Jr. (Ashley); and grandnieces, Sophie Tschudin and Ella Tschudin. Charlie is also survived by Bertha’s children, who loved him like a father, Sharon R. Cochran and Marty Rowell (Brooke), and Bertha’s grandchildren, Justin Cochran, Sarah Cochran, Jordan Rowell, Coley Rowell, and Jackson Rowell. Bertha’s children and grandchildren adored Charlie, so much so, that the phrase “What would Charlie do?” became a treasured family phrase among close family and friends. He is also survived by his dogs, Rusty and Cinder.
Charlie graduated from Auburn University with the Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and from UAB with the Master of Business Administration Degree. After working with Southern Company Services and Rust Engineering, he formed Point Engineering, Inc., from which he retired.
Charlie was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a combat platoon leader. All of the men under his leadership returned home.
Charlie had a fun-loving and generous personality. He loved his family. He was generous with his time for his friends and community and donated to organizations whose benefactors were children, veterans, and dogs. He left a smile on the face of everyone he met. Fitting his sometimes irreverence, his favorite song which he felt represented his life was “My Way” as performed by Elvis Presley. Bertha and the whole family agree that these are some of Charlie’s Quotable Quotes:
1. Write when you find work!
2. One day next Tuesday.
3. Don’t date engineers!
4. Money is only paper.
5. Have a little fun every day!
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Greater Birmingham and Shelby County humane societies, or to a charity of choice.
Private funeral service and burial for Mr. Point are planned.
