Following a career as a business writer, Mrs. Waller earned her certification as an etiquette consultant from the Washington School of Protocol, and found her true calling as a volunteer teaching etiquette at PATH, a shelter for homeless women and children, the Chalkville School for Girls, and the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women.
A devoted animal lover, Mrs. Waller often took in abandoned animals and cared for them until homes could be found. Giving love to animals was her greatest joy. A native of Birmingham, she was a member of many civic organizations and of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Waller was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Mabry E. Garner. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Waller; her son, Douglas Mabry Garner (Emily); and her grandsons, Evan (Elizabeth), Andrew, and Stewart (Alena) Garner. She is also survived by her stepsons, Karl and Paul (Karen) Waller; granddaughter, Lesley Ann Waller; and four great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service is planned for a later date.
Memorials may be made to The Greater Birmingham Humane Society or to Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
