Wayne worked as a sheet metal worker and later a business owner before he attended seminary at Samford University and Briarwood's Birmingham Theological Seminary. He opened the first Christian Coffee House, “His Filling Station,” in Cahaba Heights in the early 1970’s, and many came to Christ there.
Wayne was pastor of Faith Memorial Church from 1977 through early 1980’s, before he pastored Christian Fellowship Church for 18 years. He was a support pastor for churches in Collinsville, Alabama; Ashburn, Georgia; and Eufaula, Alabama, as well as churches in Kenya, Africa.
Wayne ministered in Honduras through Westside Ministries, digging wells, preaching the gospel, and teaching pastors conferences. He also ministered in Russia through Westside. In addition, he was a counselor/mentor to men at Turning Point men’s addiction program, and has been a faithful member of Life of Faith Church in Irondale, Alabama, serving in various capacities the last four years.
Wayne had a passion to disciple men in the Commands of Christ one on one, teaching, preaching the gospel, and counseling. He loved seeing people’s lives transformed through a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
His hobbies included reading, walking, playing golf, making bird houses, gardening, growing vegetables and flowers and working puzzles.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty, to whom he was married on June, 25 1957; daughters, Penny Wright, Londi Roberts (Randy), Tiffany Denton (Drake), and Bip Hitson; grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Lawrence, Carter, Caleb, Emma, Sophie, and Christian Denton, and Rachel Hitson; and brother-in-law, David Thompson (Pat).
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. and the Homecoming Celebration with Pastor Mark Machen officiating will begin at 11 a.m., all on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham, Alabama. Burial will be at Altadena Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Birmingham, Alabama.
