Bobbie ("Bob," "Bobbo") Jackson Whitley of Birmingham, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 24, 2021. Bobbie was a Leap Year baby, born on February 29, 1932. Therefore, he only celebrated his birthday once every four years. He was the seventh and final child born to Grover Cleveland and LD Whitley in LaGrange, Georgia.
After graduating from Spalding High School in 1950, he attended the University of Tennessee and Carson Newman College where he majored in Business. Soon thereafter, he began to work for Burroughs Computer Corporation, where he served as a service manager from Knoxville, Tennessee to Decatur, Georgia to Mobile, Alabama to Zionsville, Indiana, and finally in Birmingham.
After retiring from Burroughs Corporation, Bobbie transitioned to ownership of a ServiceMaster franchise, and later began a career in real estate and financially planning with Primerica.
Bobbie was an active member in Birmingham at Valleydale Church, where Mac Brunson faithfully served as his pastor. Bobbie was especially proud of his Sunday School Class, the Burton/Pruitt Men’s Class.
Bobbie's wife, Peggy Dobbs Whitley, preceded him in death on May 22, 2014. Their remaining family includes four children, Chuck (Martha Jo) Whitley, Mona (Jesse) Wood, Rhett (Carol) Whitley, and Ryan (Vonda) Whitley; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, immediately followed by A Celebration of Life for Bobbie Whitley at 11 a.m. at the funeral home's chapel. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
