Barclay “Buddy” Edwin Culverhouse, 80, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Buddy was quick to bring a smile through his storytelling and trademark wit.
Born to Carl Thomas and Helen Courtney Culverhouse on May 12, 1942, Buddy graduated from Woodlawn High School before joining the United States Army as an aircraft electronics and radio technician in the 1960s. Upon his return from military service, he worked with his father, building homes in Birmingham and Huntsville. It was this knowledge that would prepare him for his later work building custom homes and managing the family’s rental property. Whether Buddy was talking to a developer or the men he worked with in the field, he always earned their respect.
In 1996, Buddy would build the home that he and his wife Judy would share on Logan Martin Lake that would be filled with family memories, from Independence Day celebrations with his son’s band playing on the front porch to hosting Santa for annual visits at Christmas. With sunset cruises on the boat and rides on his Harley-Davidson, these times at the lake were some of his happiest memories.
It was also during these years that Buddy found his second home, Alpine Bay Golf Club. He established strong friendships with his golfing buddies that would last the rest of his life, and he loved traveling with them each spring to play courses across the Southeast. He also had a great fondness for the club staff, who always took such good care of them.
After moving back to town, Buddy and Judy enjoyed the companionship and kindness of their neighbors in Barkley Square, whose love and compassionate support during these past few months have been truly remarkable.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judy Culverhouse; his three sons, Brian Culverhouse, Kyle Culverhouse (Tammy), and Clay Church (Michelle); and five grandchildren, Barclay Culverhouse, Corey Church, Kate Culverhouse, EvaClaire Church, and Ian Culverhouse. He leaves behind one brother, Tim Culverhouse; mother-in-law, Eva Culverhouse; father-in-law, Jesse Moore; brother-in-law, Lann Moore (Vair); and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Barclay was preceded in death by his father, Carl Culverhouse, and his mother, Helen Culverhouse.
If you would like to honor Buddy’s legacy, grill a nice cut of meat, sneak a dessert, sit outside on a bench with your neighbors, or swing a golf club with friends. Do what he enjoyed most, and spend time with loved ones.
A committal service with military honors will be held at Alabama National Cemetery on Friday, July 29, 2022, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
