Born January 20, 1952 in Pekin to Robert Lee and Gloria (Grandia) Carney, he married Mary Ellen Danko on June 12, 1982 in Pekin. She died January 31, 2011 in Pekin. He later married Donna L. (Smith) Gardner on February 2, 2013 in Hawaii. She died September 13, 2022 in Peoria. He also was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his mother, Gloria Carney of Orlando, Florida; three sisters, Penny (Peter) Watzka of Orlando, Florida, Mary (Chuck) Shepardson of La Quinta, California and Patty (Dave) Knight of Winter Garden, Florida and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his beloved dog, Gracie.
A 1970 graduate of Pekin Community High School, Randy then graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois in Business. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
Randy owned and operated Carney’s Insurance Store located in Pekin, following in his father’s footsteps, until retiring in 2018.
He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox and Bradley Basketball. Randy also enjoyed playing cards, golfing and traveling.
He was a member of Pekin Country Club and Pekin Moose Lodge 916.
His memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Judy Steger Kenney will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Private inurnment will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lion’s Love of Liberia, 179 East Liberty Lane, Manito, IL 61546 to support a medical mission trip to two orphanages in Liberia with the Christian Medical & Dental Association. Randy’s longtime friend, Dr. Chuck Van Dyke, is traveling on the mission trip this November.
