Born November 11, 1942 in Mattoon, he was the son of James Dale and Genevieve June (Hutchcraft) Underwood. He married Veronika E. Stammler on September 18, 1964 in Amberg, Germany. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Kimberley (Perry) Buskirk of Creve Coeur, Stephanie (Kelly Pritchard) Underwood of Manito, and Erica Underwood of Marquette Heights; one son, Michael (Denielle) Underwood, Jr. of Pekin; fifteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Patrick Underwood.
Mike served in the United States Army for over 20 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He later served in the Army National Guard of Illinois.
Mike was an electrician working out of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #34 in Peoria for 20 years.
Mike enjoyed watching all sports and the company of his family and friends. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan. In his younger years, his passion was raising and racing Quarter Horses. He also had enjoyed hunting, playing baseball and bowling.
His visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Military rites will be conducted following the visitation by the Spring Bay American Legion Post # 1115 and Military Funeral Honors. There will be no services and cremation will be accorded.
