He was born May 19, 1931 at Hackleburg, Alabama to Domer and Lizzie (Gentry) Scott. He was one of twelve children born to the Scott family. LD met the love of his life, Lucy Irene Raper, while working in rural Alabama, asked to walk her home and the two married on February 16, 1949. LD left Alabama in pursuit of work and landed in Illinois, working at Corn Products Company (CPC) for 38 years. Although he resided in Illinois for most of his life, he never lost his Southern accent and charm. He had a quick wit, sense of humor and baby blue eyes, qualities that were endearing to his family, friends, and nurses up until his last day.
LD loved telling stories of a simpler, yet hard life in Alabama. He grew up hunting and gardening as a way to provide for his family as a boy and later in life enjoyed these activities with his children and grandchildren. It was rare for visitors to leave the Scott home without some kind of canned goods from the garden. He could play the guitar and sing, often harmonizing with Irene by his side. He was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan and loved watching Pekin Dragons football. Over the years, he spent a lot of time cheering for his grandkids and great-grandkids at their sporting events.
He is survived by five children, Linda Sue (Jim) Fletcher, Phillip (Melody) Scott, Debbie (Randy) Benton, Donna (Bob) Reiling, and Karen (Chris) Lewis, all of Pekin; twelve grandchildren, Jimmy Render, Jake (Tammy) Fletcher, Jeff (Laura) Render, Greg (Jen) Render, Erin (Bruce) Killen, Todd (Sara) Benton, Erika (Matt) Reeb, Elisha (Eric) Swanson, Sonya (Greg) Canary, Zach Reiling, Cory (Ashley) Scott, and Kelsey (Andy) Lewis; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and a sister, Verdell (Ronnie) Hudson of Tyler, Texas.
LD is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife who passed away on September 28, 2017; one daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Scott; one grandson, Brandon Scott Newcomb; one granddaughter, Melinda Holmes; five brothers and five sisters.
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Pekin for more than 60 years, where he formerly served as a trustee.
