Katie was born September 12, 1930 in Forrest, Illinois to Martin Maurer and Leah (Heinold) Maurer, on the family farm. She graduated from Forrest High School in 1948. She met Wilbur Francis Steingraber at ISU and they married on January 26, 1952 in Normal. He died on January 13, 2005. She was also preceded by her parents; one brother, Roy Maurer; and one sister, Bernice Bammann.
Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Sandra Steingraber of Hudson, New York and Julie (James) St. Clair of Pekin; four grandchildren, Brandon (Melissa) Skocaj and Grant Skocaj, both of Pekin, Faith de Castro of Hartford, Connecticut and Elijah de Castro of Barnwell, South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Hope (Elijah) Henry of Oak Grove, Kentucky; one great-grandson, Logan Skocaj of Pekin; one great-great-grandchild due in July; three sisters, Anna Mae Clinton of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Lucille Zimmerman of Bloomington and Louise Troyer of Waterford, Pennsylvania; one sister-in-law, Joyce (Jerry) Steingraber Busby of Clinton, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
Kay taught biology at Mackinaw High School. Later she taught kindergarten at Jefferson School in Pekin. She enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her daughters.
Kay enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and watching TV, especially The Golden Girls and Murder She Wrote. In her earlier years she enjoyed sewing, camping, traveling, and spending winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Kay was kind and gentle. Her faith and her family were most important to her.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pekin for over 50 years.
Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2024 at First United Methodist Church in Pekin. Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to First United Methodist Church, 1315 Court Street, Pekin, Illinois, or to The Baby Fold, 108 East Willow Street, Normal, Illinois.
