Born June 28, 1939 in Pekin to Fred and Lucille (Long) Rutledge, she married Albert Dale Swearingen on June 6, 1958 in Pekin. He passed away on May 17, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are one son; Dale (Billie) Swearingen of Mapleton; two grandchildren, Eric (Liz) Swearingen of East Peoria and Heidi Phipps of Forest City; four great-grandchildren, Eleanora and Elowen Swearingen of East Peoria, Antony (Kaylee Hardwick) Kemper of Pekin and Jaxon Palmer of Forest City and one great-great-granddaughter, Luna Mae Kemper of Pekin.
A homemaker, Joan was a seamstress and enjoyed, cooking, doing arts and crafts and playing cards with her friends. She also loved her family fishing trips to Wisconsin and her beloved family pets. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, friends, and church groups. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family.
Joan was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Pekin, where she taught Sunday School and Kings Kids Vacation Bible School for many years. She also served as the treasurer at the church.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2021 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Randy Justus will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Forest City.
