Born December 14, 1944 in Barry to Eldon and Fern (Harrison) Powell, he married Mary Ann Ufkes on March 14, 1964. They later divorced. He then married Jean Bowman and they later divorced.
Surviving are two sons, James “Jim” (Stephanie) Powell, Jr. of Peoria, Arizona and Jon Powell of Tulsa, Oklahoma and three grandchildren, Timothy Powell and Trevor Powell, both of Peoria, Arizona and Anandi Powell of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Patricia Paben.
Jim was an active leader for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 9 in Quincy, along with the Explorer Post, and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He owned and ran the Kalo Feed Company until a fire led to into closure. He then worked at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy for 20 years where he was in charge of the Supply Store before retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sporting clays, and trap shooting where he was very accomplished. He enjoyed riding his Honda Gold Wing Motorcycle. He will be remembered for his outgoing social skills, his stories, and his ability to talk with anyone.
A casual memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at Faith Assembly of God, 4000 State Street in Quincy. A visitation will begin at 6 p.m.
Cremation has been accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
