Born on March 9, 1937 in Marion County, Alabama to John M. and Edith (Woods) Carroll, he married Mary Holloway on August 18, 1958 in Hamilton, Alabama. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Patty (Damon) Helmig of Chapman, Kansas, Kristen Helmig of Pekin and Sandra Helmig of Owensboro, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Bryan (Lindsey) McDonald of Rome, Georgia, Marc Andrew (April) McCulley of Lewiston, Steve (Katie) Barnes in Pekin, Alina Barnes, Michelle (John) Quintal of Junction City, Kansas and Trina (David) Hoff of Hawaii and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Doris Carroll and Melinda McCulley; one brother, John M. Carroll and two sisters, Sue Carroll, Mary Lou Clark.
He worked for Illinois Corn Processing for over 49 years before retiring.
Gene enjoyed gardening and tending to his yard and flowers. He loved to collect marbles and knives and go to yard sales.
His funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, where visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.
