Born November 1, 1922 in Peoria Heights to Charles and Ruth (Harris) McGarvey, she married Marion J. Goeken on March 8, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. He survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Rebecca K. (James) Smith of Pekin and Nancy L. Johnson of Bradenton, Florida; five grandchildren, Eric Smith of Pekin, Todd Smith of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Kimberly Johnson of Denver, Colorado, Patricia (Scott) Thirion of Sarasota, Florida and Jacob Johnson of Tampa, Florida and six great-grandchildren, Eric Smith, Ashlee Smith, Alisha Smith, Ryan Smith, Chloe Thirion and Rhett Thirion. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Louise Goeken of Hopedale and Virginia Stanley of Pekin; and one step-sister, Chloe Swanson of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and three sisters.
Evelyn worked for Bergner's in Pekin and Peoria as a clerk in the post office for many years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin.
Evelyn was family oriented. She enjoyed her grandchildren and helping others. She loved to sew and was known for making clothing and doll clothes for her family.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Terry C. Edele will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
