Born May 22, 1944 in Pekin to Maurice Dean and Rosa Lee (Dick) Smith, he married Pamela Brackney Taylor on May 7, 1983 at Kingston Mines United Methodist Church. She survives.
Also surviving are five children, Penelope Kathleen Smith of Springfield, Tammy Marie (Troy Stammer) Taylor of Pekin, Stephanie Lu Anne (Ted) Wheeler of Evergreen, Colorado, Matthew Dean Smith of Peoria and Bryan H. (Erin) Taylor of Gig Harbor, Washington; six grandchildren, Archer, Ian, Brittany, Alexandria, Jradon and Kaiya; one brother, Michael (Betty) Smith of Pekin; one brother-in-law, Ron Orr; one uncle, Bernard Dick and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Andrew Donald “Andy” Smith; one brother, Lester (Jo Ann) Smith and one sister, Mary Catherine Orr.
He worked 41 years for Caterpillar, Inc. as a precision machinist working both in East Peoria and Mossville, retiring in 2005. He also was a carpenter and was proud to have built 13 houses and remodeled countless homes. Don will be remembered as a free spirit that enjoyed coin collecting, bowling and golfing. He played in golf leagues at Sunset Hills Golf Club and enjoyed bowling at Sunset Lanes, both in Pekin. Don was a proud Eagle Scout. He was a longtime civil service recovery diver.
His memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Kathy Barrett will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Kingston Mines Cemetery.
