Born February 24, 1950 in Centralia to Leonard Alvin and Martha Ann (Decker) Vaughn, he married Rachel Smith on August 13, 1976 in Canton. She died May 6, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Alvin Vaughn and Martha Morse; one brother, Leonard Vaughn and one sister, Barbara Schwartz.
Surviving are four children, Jackson (Lori) Vaughn of Batesville, Arkansas, Daniel (LeAnn) Vaughn of Canton, Michael Vaughn of Creve Coeur and Julie Rhoades of Peoria; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Kayln) Vaughn, Erik (Courtney) Vaughn, Cody (Lindsey) Vaughn, Taylor (Jay) Krieg, Chris Underwood, Mason Vaughn, James (Kayla) Schloff, Khaleena Rhoades, Sydney (Bailey) Rhoades and Skye Rhoades; two great-grandchildren and one on the way and one brother, David (Debbie) Vaughn of St. David.
Darrell was a veteran of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army serving in Vietnam. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
He worked for Local # 649 as a heavy equipment operator before retiring.
Darrell enjoyed fishing and collecting coins and stamps.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur. Visitation will be an hour prior at the funeral home. Military honors will be performed by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team and the United States Army.
