Andy was born on April 8, 1935 in Peoria to Leo and Helen McDonough. He married Joan Patterson on July 4, 1958 in Creve Coeur.
Joan survives along with their three children, Sheryl (Michael) Jones of Pekin, Timothy (Marsha) McDonough of Tullahoma, Oklahoma, and David (Theresa) McDonough of Pekin. Also surviving are their two granddaughters, Carrie (Jason) Helmig and Katie McDonough (Nathan Todd), both of Pekin, four great grandchildren, Max Helmig, Jaxon Helmig, Paisley Helmig, and Wyatt Todd, and sister, Carol Guynn of Normal. Andy treasured his time spent with his grandkids and was the most loving grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Patricia Mack and Rita Walker.
Andy was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He began his career as a switchman at the Peoria and Pekin Union Railroad, retiring as a yardmaster in 1997. One of Andy’s proudest accomplishments was the active role he played in the youth of the Pekin community. Andy was President of the Pekin Little League and received the Barney Maticka Award for his work with the youth of the area. Andy was a co-founder and President of Shade Memorial Youth Camp where he spent countless hours assisting in developing the land, seeking donations, and ultimately breaking ground on the baseball diamonds the Pekin community still enjoys today. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin. Andy was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and Chicago Bears fan, enjoyed watching NASCAR races, but more than anything, loved spending time with his family.
A visitation and service to honor Andy will be officiated by Rev. Simeon Raddatz at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin on Thursday, November 3, 2022. The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m., followed by the burial at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
Memorial contributions can be made to Shade Memorial Youth Camp of Pekin and Trinity Lutheran Church of Pekin.
