Alex “Butch” Hercreg, 95, of Marquette Heights, passed away at 12:59 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2020, at his home. He was born on June 29, 1925, in River Rouge, MI, to Alex and Mary (Vargo) Hercreg. He married Geraldine Marie LaBean on March 15, 1947 in Ecorse, MI. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1985, in Peoria.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters.
Alex is survived by his three children: Alex L. “Butch” Hercreg of Pekin, Robert (Jennifer) Hercreg of Cedarburg, WI, and Kathleen (Steve) Thomas of Carrollton, TX; six grandchildren: Melissa (Brian) Crider of Pekin, Jaime (Chris) Shoen of Carlsbad, CA, Bri (Chuck) Neumann of Little Elm, TX, Emily (Vaughn Mehler) Hercreg of Shorewood, WI, Jack (Kendall Haderlein) Hercreg of Grafton, WI, and Paige Hercreg of Cedarburg, WI; four great-grandchildren: Gage, Nora, Violet, and Brooke; three siblings: John (Patti) Hercreg of Trenton, MI; Lucille (Don) Boren of Livonia, MI, and Ann (Bob) Fix of Taylor, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
Alex served his country in the United States Army as a staff sergeant and was a veteran of World War II. In the army he earned the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/4 Bronze Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star, 3 Overseas Service Bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged January 6, 1946. He worked as a foreman for ADM in Mapleton for many years, retiring in 1990. Alex was a past member of the American Legion William Schaefer Post #44 in Pekin. He was an avid hunter of deer, rabbit, and pheasant.
Alex’s celebration of life service will be at a later date. Davison-Fulton-Woolsey Funeral Home is handling cremation services.
