John William Guy, more lovingly called "Bro. John," was born on May 6, 1924. He was the fifth of six children born to Charles and Caroline Guy. As the first son among the six, Bro. John was cherished, admired, and deeply loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
After graduating from high school in Kingston, Jamaica, Bro. John embraced the challenge of joining the Farm Work Program, which allowed him to travel between Jamaica and the United States. It was during these trips that his vibrant personality and natural charm began to shine. Known for breaking the monotony of long boat rides, he entertained fellow passengers with his piano playing and lively dancing, quickly becoming a source of joy and laughter for those around him.
Upon returning to Jamaica, Bro. John entered the political field and became a respected parish counselor and a very popular politician. Beyond his political contributions, he was an astute entrepreneur, venturing into farming, shopkeeping, and real estate. His dedication and work ethic were matched only by his passion for helping his community thrive.
Bro. John and his wife, Dr. Ethel Guy, resided in the United States for many years, first in New York and later in Texas. After attending technical school in New York, Bro. John worked diligently to support his family and community. Upon moving to Texas, he found fulfillment working at The Methodist Hospital Medical Center until his retirement.
A man of deep faith and devotion, Bro. John cherished his church, church friends, and Bible study meetings often hosted at his home. He was also a pillar of support for his wife as she pursued higher education. With patience and understanding, he encouraged her to return to university and later supported her decision to pursue graduate studies at a later age, demonstrating his unwavering love and belief in her potential.
His love for family was immense, especially for his beloved granddaughter Paige, who he enjoyed baking with—creating cakes from scratch using nothing but a wooden spoon.
Bro. John will always be remembered as a jovial soul who radiated happiness and brought smiles to everyone he encountered. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to bring joy to any situation was unmatched. A skilled cyclist, he amazed many with his daring bike rides, often leaving onlookers both awed and anxious at his fearless energy.
Bro. John is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Dr. Ethel Guy; daughters Patricia Guy, Arlene Guy, and Donna South-McCauley; and son Victor South. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughter Paige South, his brother Osborne Guy (and wife Rubena), and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loved ones. He also leaves behind countless friends and admirers whose lives he touched deeply with his warmth and humor. His memory will forever be a blessing to those who knew him.
Bro. John’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and unshakable faith. As we bid him farewell, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Until then, Bro. John, enjoy your rest—we look forward to meeting you again in the beyond.
