Roy was born December 3, 1928, in Rankin County, Mississippi, a son of the late Edwin L. Gates and Bessie M. Harper Gates.
Roy retired from General Cable/Trilogy after many years of dedicated service and was a member Cato Baptist Church. Roy was dedicated to his family and his favorite times were spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For his family, the memories made fishing and hunting at deer camp will be treasured for a lifetime.
Survivors include his wife of more than 70 years, Louise Gates; son, Roy L. Gates, Jr.; daughter, Becky Stephens and husband Ronnie; brothers, Jimmy Gates and wife Janet, and Paul Gates; sister, Linda Patrick and husband Steve; grandchildren, Tony Swilley and wife Lorie, Scott Swilley, and Kristy Johnson and husband Gary; and great-grandchildren, Emily Swilley, Hunter Swilley, Heather Swilley, Hallie Swilley, Braelyn Swilley, and Keith Johnson.
Private services will be held.
